Trinidad and Tobago Explained in 13 Minutes | History, Geography, Culture

This video covers all of it in one continuous story, starting in 1498 when Columbus named the islands without ever asking what the local Arawak and Carib communities already called them. From there we trace centuries of colonization by Spain, the Netherlands, France, and Britain, the plantation economy built on enslaved labor, and the abolition of slavery in 1834, which led directly to a wave of indentured workers from India who would go on to reshape the country's population and identity. We explain the 1889 merger that combined Trinidad and Tobago into a single colony, the early 20th-century oil boom that transformed the economy, and the country's outsized contribution to the British war effort during World War I. From there, we walk through the road to independence in 1962, the geography of both islands, the realities of a modern oil-dependent economy, and the rise of Carnival and the creative sector as a new engine of growth.
