        <description>This hands-on classroom investigation explores how engineered landfill systems control water movement and help prevent groundwater contamination. Using sand or soil to represent the ground, a sponge to represent waste, and food colouring to represent contamination, students first observe how rainfall can move through a landfill and produce contaminated liquid called leachate. Students then redesign their model landfill using features such as: • Clay or plastic liners • Leachate drainage systems • A cover or cap to reduce water infiltration By comparing their initial and improved designs, students investigate how different materials affect water movement and explore how engineers use liners, drainage and capping systems to safely manage leachate and protect surrounding soil and groundwater.</description>
